Another week another Sweet Spot, this time featuring a very English twist on the Eclair and lots and lots of ice cream. There is no getting away from it, this week London is hot hot hot and oh so humid, so nothing heavy this week, I was in the mood for lighter more summery fare.
Yauatcha is a Michelin starred Japanese restaurant in the heart of soho. It has a beautiful patisserie counter where you can buy something sweet to take away. This style of baking is a bit of a rareity in London – this style sweet would more likely be seen in the patisseries of Paris than on the streets of Soho. In honour of Wimbledon they have made a special Strawberries and Cream Eclair. This isn’t your average eclair, it has been coloured red as a nod to strawberries, is filled with a strawberries and cream cremeaux and topped with a rectangle of white chocolate and pieces of strawberry for decoration. You can see why this is more expensive, coming in at £5.90. Is it worth it? Well it did have a wonderful flavour and aroma, my only quibble? I would have liked the choux pastry a little more crisp, as it was fairly soft.

If you are on twitter and live in London you cannot of missed that Shake Shack, the famous New York based burger company has opened it first UK location, right in the middle of Covent Garden. I, like lots of others was very excited by this news – I am a big fan of the burgers and especially the Concretes.
The best way to describe a Concrete is that it’s a Mcdonalds Mcflurry on steroids. It uses Shake Shacks beautifully smooth frozen custard (ice cream) and is blended with all manner of ingredients all of great quality. In London they are using ingredients from some of my favourite places, doughnuts from St John and chocolate from Paul a Young for starters!
The result is a dense but super smooth ice cream packed full of flavour and sure to become a regular stop when i’m in the mood for ice cream, along with Geulpo and La Gelatiera. I was very lucky to get invited to the launch party and a preview tasting so was able to try lots (and lots more) of the different concretes and trust me, they are well worth a try.
